Slicing the quilting pie

A survey showed up in my Inbox yesterday from HandiQuilter, the manufacturer of my midarm quilting machine.  A completed survey made me eligible for 5 prizes.  What's a quilter to do?  I completed it.

I bought my machine at the AQS quilt show in Des Moines, so many questions were related to that--how many quilt shows do you attend?   what's your favorite thing to see?  did you attend alone or with a group?

There were expected questions regarding age, number of years I've been quilting, my favorite type of quilt, how many hours per week I quilt, magazine subscriptions, etc.

I didn't expect the survey to make me stop, evaluate, and dissect my quilting life, but two questions did that.
The EASIER question:  What is the value of all your quilting supplies, machines, tools, etc. if you went out tomorrow and replaced everything?    (The options ranged from "less than $100" to "$15,000 or more.")  Oh dear -- it counts up quickly, doesn't it?

The HARDER question:   What percentage of your quilting purchases does each of these categories represent?  (I interpreted this to mean "Where did the money go?")   The numbers must add up to 100.
___  Fabric
___  Thread
___  Cutting tools, mats, rulers, etc.
___  Sewing machines and quilting machines
___  Gadgets and notions
___  Books, magazines, patterns, DVDs.

I know the cost of my quilting and sewing machines.   But the gadgets?  All the books and magazines?  Did I spend twice as much on my fabric as I did for my machines?  Did the thread cost half as much as my rotary cutters and mats?  It all blurs together into quilted stuff, doesn't it?  I didn't lose sleep over the questions and the "division of assets" -- but I found the process interesting.   It's harder than you might think.
My numbers in order were 48 - 3 - 5 - 35 - 2 - 7.

I'll let you know if I win any prize, especially a trip to Paducah.  Or fabric from Andover.  Or a stack of new books.  Ahh -- we quilters can never have enough, can we?  It all sounds so good.

Oh dear. I wouldn't even know where to start quantifying everything.

Best of luck, I hope you win!!!

I took a similar survey and am leaning more and more to the fact that I have enough.... and while I love lots of new fabric.... when I have $10,000 worth of fabric here some place.... I have enough.... this year am trying for no new fabric - just for a year - it does help that my studio was moved last Thanksgiving and any fabric moved into that room I refold and put on the shelf....sort of like all new fabric.

I filled out the same survey! It did require some thought, didn't it? It was fun reading how you responded; wish I'd thought to keep track of my answers!

Ditto on the survey. It was a good mental exercise to consider the dollar amount of my inventory.

Oh, my! I would be at a total loss to divide that stuff up. I would probably end up frustrated and scrap the survey, prizes notwithstanding! : )

It is interesting to know just where the money does go in the quest for a quilting life. Does all that include the cost of entry to quilt shows and the cost to get there. Travel here in the UK is not cheap and so it makes you think. I may have a little tot up and see just what it all comes to. Good luck with the prize winning.

I had the same email but mine was from the International Quilt Study Group.
I don't care to think too seriously about quilting numbers:)

Oh wow! I got the same email! I haven't done my survey yet, though. I'm glad I read your post first, so I have a little time to think about my answers.

I also had the same survey from the International Quilt Study Group. It was interesting. I just wonder what they will do with all the information they receive. The most important question, for me, was the last....my opinion on any topic quilt related, good or bad.

If we do sit and think about how much we spend on quilting stuff..it's would most likely be in the thousands of $'s
Fabrics and books are my biggest spend up..
Good luck with the prize winning..

I think this is very dangerous! :-) Once we start adding it all up, we could keel over in shock!

Come by my piece-fulness blog to see photos from the Tucson Quilt Show!
