Another construction zone

Houses are being built all over blogland.   I was tempted by Building Houses from Scraps, but I knew I'd burn out, trying to paper piece or hand piece one 3" house every day for a year.  Bravo to all those quilters who've begun that challenge.

Then I spotted the first Schnibble quilt for 2012 on Mary's blog, Quilt Hollow.   "Full House" is cute as can be.  She has a link to that project, if you're interested.

And I'm sure you'll enjoy seeing the lovely houses that Julia is making from Kaffe fabric-- yet another style of house.

I have my own construction zone under way, making 8" blue scrappy houses.  Yellow, orange, and rust scraps are the windows and doors.  I'll make either a 6x8 or a 7x9 layout, with scrappy blue sashing and a scrappy blue border.  Except for the roof row, all other house parts are cut from 1-1/2" strips.

This is a great scrap buster project, as you can see by my plates with pieces cut and ready to go.  I've become comfortable with the pattern.  My last house took only 12 minutes to make, using the precut pieces.

I'm sewing with friends this weekend, and I'll stack the filled plates, putting them into a 1-gallon ziplock bag.  Squash out the air, zip it shut, and the pieces will NOT move when I transport them.
The pattern I'm using is called "Blueprints," a 1997 supplementary pattern from "Sew Many Quilts," the original name of Fons and Porter's magazine.  I pulled the pattern out of a stack that others were discarding, destined for the dump.  Lucky me!

In blogland there is certainly no depression in the construction industry--housing popping up everywhere. You are set and ready to make a whole subdivision. Looking good!

Love the colours you are using Vivian and what a sensible size. I am already behind with two blocks made of the 3" blocks. There are going to be some fabulous quilts from this housebuilding frenzy.

I love the paper plate idea. I'm working on a quilt with lots of little pieces, many different sizes and many sizes very close to other sizes. I'm going to use your idea to keep these pieces organized. So brilliant, I should have thought of it myself! LOL

You are working in a neat construction zone. I never thought of using paper plates for keeping things separate and organized.

Your houses are wonderful, love all the blues you are using. I am itching to start some construction of my own...trying to decide if I want to do the Schnibbles, or just do my own thing and use a pattern from EQ. Thanks for inspiring me...I use the paperplates too...helps me stay organized until Max the cat decides to start moving the pieces around!

Your house building skills sure revved up to top speed quickly! This would be a great scrap buster for all those 1.5 inch pieces in my scrap bin. Love your colors.

I love house blocks and your colors are great. I want to try my hand at the little 3" houses but I know I can never make one a day for a year. I also find the first house block a little challenging but the second and third and fourth get easier and easier. But, then I get sidetracked and it's like starting from scratch when I picke the house blocks up again. Have a fun sewing weekend!

Had to smile looking at your pictures. I recently pieced another house top and I use the paper plate idea each time I make one. The only way to keep all those pieces together....and then when I had to put it away I did the squish out the air in the big baggie, too. Ha! Great minds.....
