| preparing for company |
We live in a house unsuited for my beloved past-time. With no basement and a stash that could supply a small quilt shop, plus (too many) sewing machines, a new quilting machine, and all the supplies needed to make several hundred quilts, DH and I live in the midst of Quilt Central.
I read with envy and longing about those with entire rooms or suites dedicated to quilting. No upheaval required when company comes. Just close the door.
We've borrowed a van for the next 10 days (2 grandchildren in car seats + 2 extra adults to transport), and it's going to stay on the driveway. Empty half of the garage! We've been carrying storage bins filled with fabric out to garage, mostly the 64-qt (61 L) size. I could leave a few along an empty wall of the living room and drape a pretty quilt over them, but non-stash-owners would not understand that. And besides -- we want granddaughter Maddie to help us set up a Christmas tree while they're here. The tree goes along that wall.
The bins are relatively easy to move, though I'm overweight and out of shape, and husband is scheduled for left knee replacement in 2 weeks. We're quite a pair, but together we're carefully moving them up 7 steps of our split-level home and out to the garage.
Disappointment #1-- stacks and sacks galore of scraps and strips that I want to sort and trim to a recognizable shape. Too late for that now. They're being shoved into yet another bin and will have to wait.

| considering buying |
I have hand sewing projects set aside to pull out and work on when time allows. Our hours and days will be busy, but there will be sitting time, and I prefer a project in my hands. And maybe I can use some down time to catch up on reading blogs. I am SO far behind.
Has anyone purchased this DVD set, "Why Quilts Matter: History, Art and Politics"? or have you seen the episodes on public TV? I've forgotten to watch them so far. Maybe I'll remember today, as they're shown locally on Saturday mornings. This 9-episode documentary series was created by Kentucky Quilt Project, Inc. and looks fascinating. You can watch a trailer and read more details. I'm considering buying the DVD set, but I want to watch at least a couple of the episodes first.
Enjoy your weekend. Gramma time is almost here!

Vivian, I know the challenge of having to remove things to have a bit of needed room. I'm sure the time spent with your loved ones will make it all worth it, especially since you'll have some handwork to keep hands busy.
Additionally, thank you for posting about the challenges of a split level home to old knees. Spending my first years of teaching several decades ago on my knees next to student desks, did some damage that took 40 years to show up, but not enough to require surgery--so your post made me more grateful for my single level home. Thanks for reminding me.
I feel your pain! Wishing your husband a speedy recover on his knee replacement. I had mine done 4 weeks ago. I have had lots of time to sew and read blogs since I cant walk around much right now. Enjoy those grandbabies
I've been taping and watching those episodes and very been very interesting. I don't agree with everything that is said but it's given me a great insight into a different world of quilting.
You've been busy, busy - you're going to love having those grands around. Enjoy!
I'm in the process of doing the same thing as I prepare to bring my mom to stay with us for an extended period of time.
I'm sure you'd do it all over again!
Have a fantastic time witht he extended family.
I know how it feels to not have the little clothes sewn for the visit. Your muscles will be in great shape after all the moving so you'll be able to pick up the grandbabies with ease. Have a great time with the family!!
Based on the post title I wondered if you or your hubby had kicked the other one out. : )
Glad that is not the case and it is the quilting stuff moving to the garage. Good you will have the grandkids around to fill the void. Enjoy!
A very exciting reason to do a lot of heavy lifting! What a wonderful time you'll have once all that hard work is done :)
I haven't watched the episodes though I have heard of them. I don't think they are available in my area.
I know what you mean about extra people and no room. I'm sure having your family home is worth the moving of all your quilting things. I haven't done much sewing since hunting season started. My sewing room is back to being a bedroom. I dream of a basement or little room "of my own".
You just have to tell yourself how much you are going to enjoy visitors and not even think about having to lug it all back up again. happy holidays!
How exciting that the newest addition will be there soon! Your quilts are beautiful. I know what you mean about having to pack up quilting supplies. We moved from OH to PA into a much smaller place. All my quilting things are still tucked away. My guest room will be my quilt room and it's really too small for either. Enjoy your time with family!
So much happening at your place , Vivian...it will be lovely to have the family together. Best wishes for Dh's surgery..
Julia ♥
It will be worth every minute it has taken you to move that wonderful fabric collection- note the word- not stash!
You can now enjoy every moment with you family. I guess they are home for Thanksgiving, have a wonderful time. A
Years were spent in the military making do with whereever I could for my quilting obession. For years my stuff was in bins....just seeing those brings back haunting memories of not finding what I was looking for! :-)
Enjoy time spent with your family...sounds well worth the effort!!!
lucky me, why quilts matter will be under my christmas tree.
What a big job moving all the fabric!
I know how heavy it is.
Enjoy time with your family
xx
Sometimes life just happens, doesn't it????? My DH is one week out of a total left knee replacement. My advice, take it one day at a time and go to bed early!!
I am so sorry you are having to pack away much-loved quilting supplies! You will love your time with the family, and when you get to move things back into the area you normally use for quilting, it will almost be like Christmas...I know, I just moved stuff all the way across country after storing a lot of it for months (and some of it I hadn't seen in years!) Best wishes for that day when it arrives! In the meantime, enjoy your loved ones! Happy Thanksgiving!
How sad to have to pack it away. :( My quilt history group bought that DVD, and we are going to watch it a bit at a time at our meetings.
I don't envy you having to move your stash, but it's for a wonderful reason.
What a workout moving all that fabric to the garage. How handy is your DH? The garage could easily be converted to a wonderful sewing room. ;)
